NCS Team Mentor (Thurrock)

NCS is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity open to 15, 16 and 17 year olds across England. It is a unique programme mixing fun, discovery and challenge, designed to build confidence and prepare young people for their journey into adulthood.

We are seeking a motivated Team Mentor to assist a team of up to 15 diverse 16-17 year olds on the NCS Programme. Team Mentors will have a passion for coaching and inspiring young people. They will assist the Team Leader in the delivery of the NCS Programme, including motivating and supervising young people during residential, assisting in the delivery of workshops, support and including supporting the team through their social action project.

The program starts 20^th October and lasts for a month approximately. Phase 1+2 is between 20-26^thOctober. Phase 3 is from 2rd November 30 hours all in till the graduation.

Pay rate: ₤1092 gross all in after completing the program 

Main duties and accountabilities:
* To be responsible for up to 15 young people in a team; to provide the supervision, motivation and inspiration to help your team succeed and enjoy the NCS experience.
* To keep your team of NCS young people focused and on track with the programme.

* Work with the Team Leader to provide practical and pastoral care of the participants, including night time hours during the residential phase.
* Support and work with Team Leaders to deliver practical and inclusive workshop sessions for young people. Tasks may include preparing workshop materials, and/or leading small tasks within the activities.

* Coach young people with additional needs on a one-to-one basis if required,
* Assist the Team Leader in ensuring young people complete the required 30 hours of social action planning and delivery.
* Work with young people to make up any hours missed on phase 3.

* Providing constructive criticism and problem solving to further challenge and develop the participants’ social action projects.
* Challenge participants suitably to ensure that projects are not focussed on fundraising such as cake sales, car washes etc.
* Report any safeguarding concerns in line with Ingeus’ protocol.
* Promote and drive response rates of our NPS survey amongst your team of young people.
* To support the learning progression of participants and support group and individual guided reflection as a core principle of the programme.

As a Team Mentor, you are committing to the completion of all training, modules and delivery requirements set out below.

Mandatory Days:

2 days of face to face training plus On Line Trainings.

Attendance at the NCS pre-departure event and graduation is also required.

The program

Phase 1 (Team Building)

One residential from Saturday 20^th October 2018 to Tuesday 23^rd October 2018. You will be expected to work with your Team Leaders to support your team of young people during their team building activities. Motivating young people, promoting team work, and encouraging supervised risk taking; getting young people outside of their comfort zones.

Phase 2 (Skills Building):            

Non-residential phase based over 3 days; 24^th October 2018 – 26^th October 2018. Typical hours 8:30-17:00, hours may vary slightly. The Team Mentor must attend morning staff meetings. The Team Mentor will fully participate in all workshop sessions during phase 2 with enthusiasm and energy. They will be expected to support team leaders in delivering any internally led sessions. This could include completing preparation tasks such as setting up spaces and preparing workshop materials. They may also be asked to lead warm up activities and games.

Phase 3 (Team Challenge):
Non-residential phase based in team’s delivery area of Thurrock. Working with the Team Leader, the Team Mentor will work support their team in the planning and deliver of their Social Action Projects. It is important that phase 3 is youth led, the role of the Team Mentor should be to point the team in the right direction, provide constructive criticism and challenge the team’s suitability of their project. The Team Mentor will be expected to support young people to make up any missed hours of phase 3. They may do this by setting extra planning or delivery tasks, and evidencing how a young person has made up any lost hours.

Attendance at Graduation to support your team during their celebration. You will celebrate your team’s achievements, and make sure your team are at their best.

Accommodation & Food & Travel
Accommodation and food is provided for the 4 days & 3 nights of the phase 1 residential. Transport is provided to and from activity centre. All staff must make their own way to pick up and drop off points for phase 1. All staff must organise their own transport to and from Phase 2 and 3 delivery locations. Please note, the location of phase 3 is not fixed. Although you will be based in Thurrock, Essex, precise location(s) will be determined by young people’s social action projects
