Graduate Materials Engineer/Metallurgist
Independent Forgings and Alloys (IFA) is one of the UK’s leading independent aerospace and industrial forgers. The unique feature about IFA is the combination of open and closed-die forging while also undertaking the whole production process from raw material to the finished product in one location. Operating from a (Apply online only)ft2 facility in Sheffield, we manufacture high-integrity, open-die and closed-die forged components in nickel alloy, titanium, stainless steel and carbon alloys for customers and tier-one suppliers within the aerospace, nuclear, power generation, marine as well as oil and gas sector.
What is a Graduate Materials Engineer/Metallurgist?
Graduate Materials Engineer/Metallurgist work as part of a team to provide technical support and expertise for all areas of Engineering and Manufacturing functions. Their key role is to ensure products are produced to the required specification and/or systems remain operational within their designated field. They work with minimum supervision and take responsibility for the quality, accuracy and timely delivery of the work they undertake.
During your graduate programme you will learn:
* Understanding the structure, properties and characteristics of common materials used in the manufacture of components and how they operate within their working environment.
* Determining the most efficient and effective approach to support the business and customers using structured processes and techniques.
* Selecting and using a range of measuring, diagnostic and testing equipment to check components and systems are produced and operated to the required quality, accuracy and performance levels as appropriate.
* Complying with statutory, quality, organisational and health and safety regulations while carrying out and supporting manufacturing and engineering processes.
* Reading and interpreting engineering data: reading and interpreting engineering drawings, specifications and computer generated information in order to determine what has to be produced and to what specification.
Key Accountabilities
Testing
* Familiarisation with procedures and specifications whilst assisting NDT technicians.
* Supervised hands-on ultrasonic, die-penetrant and magnetic particle testing along with visual and dimensional inspection.
* Interpreting requirements from specifications and test instruction paperwork.
* Metallographic specimen selection and preparation.
* Assisting in the completion of failure investigations.
* Completing reports and other information as required for data interpretation.
* Maintaining a clean and safe working environment at all times.
Metallurgy
* Ability to understand material specifications.
* Ability to decipher test house certificates.
* Reviewing and interpreting customer enquiries and specifications.
* Investigating of non-conformances
Quality
* Review procedure for compliance to customer purchase order requirements.
* Produce certificates of conformity for supply jobs.
* Raising and controlling Pyrometry purchase orders.
* Customer liaison.
* Internal audits.
Qualifications
Essential:
* Bachelor’s Degree in a subject-related study area.
Desirable:
* Master’s Degree in a subject-related study area.
