English Academic Mentor Specification – what do you need to be considered for this role?

– Minimum of a 2:1 degree within an English related degree (English Literature, Language, Linguistics, Journalism, Creative Writing)
– GCSEs of C or above in English, Maths and Science
– The desire to work towards qualifying as an English Teacher in the future
– A love of education and the determination needed to pass this on to the next generation!
– The confidence, creativity and enthusiasm needed to motivate the 11-16 age range
– The resilience needed to deal with challenging situations calmly and professionally

About the English Academic Mentor role

As an Academic Mentor, you will be tasked with delivering 1:1 and small group interventions to enhance the learning and confidence of your students within key areas of the English curriculum. You will predominantly work alongside the 11-16 age range; driving up a love of English in KS3 students and helping KS4 to feel confident prior to taking their GCSE exams.

By getting to know your student’s strengths and weaknesses, you will be able to identify areas within the curriculum where you can support their learning and areas where you can help them to further extend and expand their competence.

A graduate who can think creatively and unlock the potential of students within the English department will be the perfect candidate for this role.
Once settled into your Academic Mentor role, you may get the chance to lead larger groups within English. This experience will be really helpful for those who are considering a career as an English Teacher.
