Graduate Recruitment Agencies
Graduate Recruitment Agencies help recent graduates to find roles. They will usually work with a wide selection of clients, to whom they help to fill vacancies. They receive their commission off the Employer when they make a placement. This is usually a percentage of the starting salary.
The usual process of working with a graduate recruitment agency is this. You, the candidate, will email in or upload your CV. Perhaps you’ll apply for a job. You will get a response email. A recruitment consultant should call you or arrange a time for a call. On the call they will be interviewing you, but also finding out more about what you are looking for. They might ask you in for a face to face interview. However this is more the case with local recruitment agencies. If they do have a job role for you they might ask you to come in to meet them first, but this isn’t always the case.
Here is a selection of the most popular UK graduate recruitment agencies. They might not be purely for recent graduates, but do recruit for the graduate sector.

Tips on working with Graduate Recruitment Agencies.
Register with graduate recruitment agencies. Recruitment agencies work closely with employers. Most jobs don’t get advertised on job sites and some jobs don’t even get advertised on recruitment agencies own sites. It’s well worth registering. Most graduate recruitment agencies get sent or have access to CVs on major job sites and CV databases. So there’s no need to register with them all. It’s not easy to find out which ones resource from which site so we recommend registering with a mixture of large generalist and smaller career specific ones.
Take advantage of their graduate career services. Some agencies also provide CV writing, interview practice and even training.
Keep in regular contact with the graduate recruitment agencies. When considering applicants you want to be at the forefront of their mind. It’s also good to build a friendly relationship with them.
Behave professionally & sell yourself. Treat every conversation or meeting as you would an interview process. They will be putting you in front of their clients, so they don’t want someone who is likely to make them look they are wasting clients time. It’s still important to remain light hearted and not too serious. You also need to sell yourself. Make sure that the graduate recruitment agencies know your strengths, so that they can sell you.
Be firm on your salary. Especially if temping or contracting. Often graduate recruitment agencies will receive a set rate from the employer and your salary will come out of this. Most agencies are fair and some employers will enforce a set rate but the less they pay you the more profit they make.
Manage your expectations. Graduate recruitment agencies will get a lot of CVs sent in. There will more than likely be a lot of competition for each role.
A good way to find recruitment agencies is to search on job boards for jobs that you take your interest or are similar. Take the name of the agency and write to them directly.
Locations of Graduate Recruitment Agencies.
There isn’t a huge range of specialist graduate recruitment agencies and they are scattered around the UK. In terms of general and specialist agencies they can be found UK wide. Quite often within a city there will be a area just off the main highstreet, where there will be a few gathered together. However technology has brought the ability to be flexible. So some agencies have gone for out of town offices and many agents work from home.
Costs of using Graduate Recruitment Agencies.
As a potential employee there really shouldn’t be any costs to using them. The agencies get paid strong fees by the employers upon placement so they should not be charging candidates as well. Occasionally CV writing services might occur a fee, however a decent agency will help with this for free or at least point you in the right direction. Training may also come at a fee (eg Sales training), however some agencies also offer this for free. If you are asked to pay a fee, be very wary and see if you can get the same service for free.
Recruitment Agency Qualifications.
There aren’t many qualifications in the recruitment industry. It’s not as essential as a plumber being corgi registered. For an agency though you might liie to look out for the REC symbol. The Recruitment & Employment Confederation is the professional body for recruitment. To join agencies must pass compliance.
On an individual basis, agents may also display Institute of Recruitment Professionals (IRP) membership.
Other listings of Graduate Recruitment Agencies.
We haven’t listed all of the graduate recruitment agencies and general agencies here, there are literally thousands!

As well as graduate recruitment agencies, the REC is a huge resource of everyting about recruitment.
Recruitment Agency Definitions & Jargon.
When you speak to your graduate recruitment agency you might get overwhelmed with some of the terms. It’s a good idea to be prepared. Here are some of the most commonly used terms.
Candidate: The individual to potentially fill the job vacancy.
Head hunt: Targeting specific individuals, often currently in work to fill a role.
Independent Recruiter: A recruiter who works on their own.
Temporary Employment: Employment for a certain period of time. Can be referred to as ‘seasonal’ or ‘temps’. Often employed through an agency.
Permanent Employment: Employed directly by the employer. Will receive company benefits.
Temp to Perm: A job role where following a probation phase, usually 3 or 6 months, the role will become permanent.
Executive search: A candidate search, usually for senior/qualified candidates.
Resourcing: A search for candidates and qualifying them for the role.
Can I join more than one graduate recruitment agency?
Yes! Join as many as you like. It’s definitely worth registering with a few, not just for the jobs. They can provide some great advice, particularly CV advice and interview techniques.
More tips to working with graduate recruitment agencies.
The following video is called ‘The Secret to Working With Recruitment Agencies – Top Tips’. It’s worth a watch. It’s by a recruitment consultant and it’s really valuable to see things from their perspective.
What is the REC?
When scanning through your graduate recruitment agencies you will probably see the REC mentioned. You might just see their logo. The Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC) is the professional body for UK recruitment businesses. However just because someone isn’t a member of the REC it doesn’t mean they’re not a great agency. That’s because agencies have to pay (quite a considerable amount) to be a member.
