Graduate Interview Tips

Graduate job interviews can seem a daunting prospect. But if you’re prepared they really need not be. In this section we’re going to give you our top tips for success as well as point you in the direction of some help.

Our top tips for graduate interview success

1. Know your interview structure
Find out as much as you can about your interview;
– Who are you meeting with? – Type their names in google and find out about what they do
– What should you wear? – Largely the dresscode is smart but some employers prefer you to dress slightly more casual, particularly there are going group assessments.
– Will there be any tests? – there may be graduate aptitude tests – practice them!
– Are they expecting a presentation?
– How long will it last?
– Is there anything you can bring along – eg – coursework, design portfolio.

2. Research the company
Spend some time on this, go through their website and look up nay complicated terms. The more you can bring into an interview about them the better and they’repretty much always goign to ask, “So why do you want to work for us?”

3. Research relevant news stories
Current affairs are bound to have an impact on any company do a bit of resaerch for relevant news stories and think how thye’ll affect companies in that sector.

4. Go through typical questions and prepare answers
See our Graduate Interview Questions section, practice and perpare.

5. Take a copy of your CV and cover letter
Usually they’ll have this printed off for you but just in case. It’s useful to have incase you forget something. There’s anothing wrong with referring to this

6. Mind your body language
– Give a firm handshake and smile when you first greet.
– Make sure you look people in the eyes when talking to them and make sure you don’t just talk to one person. Even if only 1 person is asking the questions, still talk to them as a group.
– Sit up straight
– Use your hands to signal and emphasis points but don’t be too dramatic.

7. Make sure you’re fit and healthy
Like any performance you’ll be better after a good night’s sleep and if you’ve eaten well.

8. Prepare some questions of your own
Remember interviews are a 2 way process. You want as much information as possible. Ask about benefits. If there’s commission involved ask about the commission structure. Ask a random question about the company just to show that you’ve researched them.
– You can find a list of questions in our Graduate Interview Questions section.
– Also don’t forget to ask when you are likely to hear back.
